Questions
Does it handle accented characters and emoji?
Yes. The text is encoded as UTF-8 before conversion, so Greek, accents, CJK and emoji all survive a round trip. Simpler tools that skip this step corrupt anything outside plain ASCII.
What is the URL-safe alphabet?
Standard Base64 uses + and / which have special meanings in a URL. The URL-safe variant swaps them for - and _ and drops the trailing padding, so the result can be dropped into a link.
Is Base64 a form of encryption?
No, and this matters. Base64 is an encoding, not a cipher. Anyone can decode it instantly, so never use it to protect a password or anything else sensitive.
Why does decoding fail on my string?
Usually the string was truncated or had characters added by a mail client. Decoding needs the whole, unbroken string, although padding and line breaks are handled for you.
