IdenticalCheck: Compare Files and Find Duplicates on Mac
IdenticalCheck app icon IdenticalCheck · For Mac

Same file or not? Know in a second.

IdenticalCheck compares what's inside your files, byte for byte, right from the menu bar. It also finds the duplicates hiding across your folders and drives, so you can clear them out safely.

Requires macOS 15 or later · Removing duplicates is a one-time Pro unlock, no subscription.

The Find Duplicates window showing 41.66 GB in duplicate copies across 1,193 groups, a bar of videos, archives, images, audio and documents, and each group's copies with the one to keep marked Kept.

Check files

Drop files. Get the answer.

Click the menu bar icon and drop files on the panel. It stays open while you work in Finder, so there's no aiming for the top of the screen. IdenticalCheck compares their SHA-256 hashes and tells you if they match.

  • Or select files in Finder, right-click and choose Check if Identical
  • Copy any file's hash to verify a download or a backup
The IdenticalCheck menu bar panel saying Files are identical for Wedding Photos.zip and Wedding Photos (Backup Drive).zip, with both SHA-256 hashes shown.
Many files at once

Which of these are the same?

Drop three files, or thirty. Files with the same contents share a letter, so the real copies stand out at a glance, whatever they're called.

  • Compares contents, not names or dates
  • Reads big files a piece at a time, so even huge videos are quick
The panel comparing four contracts: three share the letter A because their contents are identical, and the signed version is marked B.
Find duplicates

Every folder. Every drive.

Add folders, whole drives, external disks and network shares, then scan them together. A million files are listed in seconds, and only the files that could match are read.

  • Right-click a folder in Finder and choose Find Duplicates in Folder
  • Skips your Library and system folders, so your apps keep working
The Find Duplicates setup screen with Pictures, Movies, Documents, Downloads and a Backup 2TB drive added, the free space of each drive, and a Scan for Duplicates button.
Compare A to B

Clear out an old backup.

Compare A to B finds the files on a backup drive that you already have on your Mac. Files in A are never touched. Only the copies in B can be removed.

  • Auto-select keeps the oldest copy, the newest, or the copies in a folder you choose
  • Move the copies to the Trash, and Undo puts them backPRO
Compare A to B between a Photo Library Export folder and an Old MacBook backup: 4.3 GB of copies in B that already exist in A, with the A copies locked and kept.
Safe by design

Nothing goes by mistake.

One copy of every file always stays, everything goes to the Trash, and Undo puts it back. Your files never leave your Mac.

Undo any cleanup
Copies go to the Trash, never straight to deletion, and Undo brings them back.
Checked again first
Before a copy is moved, IdenticalCheck checks it hasn't changed since the scan.
Quick Look previews
See every copy before it goes, sorted by kind, size and location.
Filters and exclusions
Hide kinds of files or small ones, and skip folders such as node_modules or .git.
Keyboard shortcut

Private
Everything happens on your Mac. No account, no network connection, no tracking.
