AppSift · for Mac

Terms of Service

The rules for using AppSift and this website. Short, in plain English, and worth two minutes before you download.

AppSift is made by Giorgos Trigonakis, an independent developer based in Athens, Greece. The app is free. There is no account to create, nothing to subscribe to, and nothing about you is collected. By downloading or using AppSift you agree to what follows.

What you are allowed to do

You get a personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable licence to install and use AppSift on Macs you own or control, for as long as you like, at no cost. That licence is yours to use, not to sell.

Please do not:

  • Sell, rent or sublicense the app, or redistribute it as your own.
  • Reverse engineer, decompile or modify it, except where the law explicitly gives you that right regardless of what this document says.
  • Remove the signature, or pass around a modified build under the AppSift name.
  • Use it to hammer Apple's services, scrape at volume, or do anything that breaks Apple's own terms.

The app itself, its name, its icon and its design stay the property of the developer. Nothing here transfers ownership of any of that to you.

Prices and app information

AppSift shows information about apps published on the App Store: prices, ratings, in-app purchase tiers, chart positions, release dates and similar. All of it comes from Apple's public interfaces, and all of it is presented as it was when it was last fetched.

Always confirm the price on the App Store before you buy. Prices change without notice, a figure in AppSift can be minutes or days out of date, and a price alert is a prompt to go and look, not a promise that a discount is still live.

Price history is recorded from the moment you install the app, so a chart fills in over time rather than arriving complete. Deals data is collected for a subset of storefronts. None of this information is advice about what to buy, and the developer is not responsible for a purchase you make on the strength of something AppSift displayed.

AppSift does not sell anything and cannot install anything. When you decide to buy an app, it hands you to the App Store, and the purchase is entirely between you and Apple under Apple's terms.

No connection with Apple

AppSift is an independent app. It is not made by, endorsed by, affiliated with or supported by Apple Inc. Apple, App Store, Mac, macOS, iPhone and iPad are trademarks of Apple Inc. They appear here only to describe what the app works with. App names, icons and descriptions shown inside AppSift belong to their respective developers.

What the app connects to

AppSift collects nothing about you and has no analytics, no tracking and no third-party SDKs. It does need the network to do its job, and it talks to exactly three places:

  • Apple (itunes.apple.com and apps.apple.com), for search results, app details and chart positions.
  • The deals file hosted on Backblaze B2, a plain data file that everyone downloads identically.
  • The update feed, also on Backblaze B2, to see whether a newer version exists.

Those requests carry no identifier and no account. As with any request to any server, the server on the other end can see the connection itself, including your IP address. Your watchlist, collections, saved searches, history and app library are stored only on your Mac and are never sent anywhere. See the Privacy Policy for the full picture.

Automatic updates

Because AppSift is distributed from this website rather than the Mac App Store, it keeps itself up to date using Sparkle, a widely used open source updater. It asks your permission before its first automatic check, and you can turn automatic checks off in Settings at any time and update by hand instead.

Every update is signed and notarized by Apple, and Sparkle verifies the signature before installing anything.

The app is free, and may change

AppSift costs nothing today and there is no paid tier. If a paid tier is ever added, the features that were free when you downloaded the app stay free.

Features can be added, changed or removed as the app develops, and it depends on interfaces run by Apple that can change or stop working without warning. The app is offered as it is, with no promise that it will remain available, keep working, or keep doing any particular thing.

No warranty

AppSift is provided "as is" and "as available", without warranty of any kind, whether express or implied, including any implied warranty of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, accuracy, or non-infringement. You use it at your own risk.

Limits on liability

To the fullest extent the law allows, the developer is not liable for any indirect, incidental, special or consequential loss arising from your use of AppSift, and specifically not for a purchase you made, or a discount you missed, on the basis of information the app displayed. Since the app is supplied free of charge, total liability for any claim is limited to zero, which is what you paid.

Your consumer rights are not affected. Nothing in this section takes away rights that Greek or European Union consumer law gives you and does not allow to be signed away, and nothing here excludes liability for death, personal injury, fraud or gross negligence.

Ending the agreement

You can stop using AppSift at any time by dragging it to the Trash, and that ends this agreement. The licence ends automatically if you break the terms above. The sections on no warranty, limits on liability and governing law carry on applying afterwards.

Governing law

These terms are governed by the law of Greece, and the courts of Athens, Greece have jurisdiction. If you use AppSift as a consumer resident elsewhere in the European Union, you keep the protection of the mandatory consumer law of the country you live in, and you may bring proceedings in your local courts.

Changes to these terms

These terms may be updated as the app changes. The current version always lives at this address, with the date below showing when it last changed. Continuing to use AppSift after a change means you accept the updated terms. If a change is significant, it will be noted on the website.

Getting in touch

Questions about any of this, or about the app itself, are welcome. Use the contact page, or write to trigonakis@gmail.com.
